Notice of Car Disposal & Vehicle Licence Cancellation in Hobart, Tasmania

Posted on 05th, Mar 20

As a car owner, there might come a time when you need to apply for Vehicle License Cancellation in Tasmania. If you’re not sure what this means or what you need to do to have your vehicle licensed cancelled, then this guide is for you.

There can be a number of different reasons for the cancellation of registration, such as:

  • The car’s wrecked
  • The car’s been stolen
  • The car’s being taken interstate or overseas
  • The car’s been claimed by an insurance provider (this happens in instances where the car’s been wrecked in an accident and written off)

Why Notice of Car Disposal Is Important?

As a vehicle owner, when you dispose of the responsibility of owning the vehicle it is very important that you transfer the vehicle into the new owner’s name. This is because once you sell the vehicle, you are no longer in control of it or what happens with it. So, if there’s a speeding fine or the car is involved in an accident, it is not your fault or responsibility.
We strongly advise you to not rely on the new buyer to take care of the transfer of the vehicle. To protect you from any future issues, you need to submit the notice for car disposal.

How and When Should I Dispose of The Car?

Once you’ve sold the car (or given it to someone), you must notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 7 days. This can be done online at the Department of State Growth Transport website. Failure to notify the Registrar of the sale of your car will leave you vulnerable, as you will still be considered legally responsible for the vehicle.

What Documents and Information Will I Need for Notice of Car Disposal?

When notifying the Registrar of Motor Vehicles that you have sold your vehicle, you will have to provide the following:

  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)/chassis number
  • Vehicle Registration Number
  • Date the vehicle was sold
  • Selling price (or market price) of the vehicle
  • The buyer and seller’s surname (or the name of the organisation if that’s the case)
  • The buyer and seller’s Tasmanian Driver License (or if it’s an organisation, then their Motor Registry Customer Identification Number (CIN))

What Should I Do If My Car Has Been Written Off?

If your car was badly damaged in an accident and has been written off, then you need to provide Transport Tasmania with one of the two:

    • A written letter from your insurance provide or lose assessor declaring that the vehicle’s been written off.

Or

      • An accident report from the police.

What Should I Do If My Car Has Been Stolen?

If your car was stolen and was not recovered, then you are eligible for a refund (from the date the vehicle was stolen). You will need to complete the statutory declaration form – MR162 and get a report in writing from either the police or your insurance provider, confirming that your vehicle was stolen on the specified date.

So, there you have it. A detailed guide on how, when, and why you should opt for notice of car disposal and license cancellation in Hobart. We hope you found this guide helpful.
